The book Hounds

Touching Moments is currently in the process of becoming affiliated with the Intermountain Therapy R.E.A.D. Program.  Reading Education Assistance Dogs (R.E.A.D.) is a literacy program built around the appealing idea of reading to dogs. The goal is to foster positive attitude toward reading and learning. Animals are ideal reading companions because they:

  · Help increase relaxation and lower blood pressure
  · Listen attentively
  · Do not judge, laugh or criticize
  · Allow children to proceed at their own pace
R.E.A.D. programs are being implemented across the country in elementary schools, libraries, pre-schools and child care facilities, before and after school programs, boys and girls clubs and youth detention facilities.

The Results Are Significant
Participating kids make enormous strides in reading and communication skills. In addition, building self esteem, confidence and social skills are bonus benefits!
When a R.E.A.D. dog is listening, the environment is transformed. A child’s dread is replaced with eager anticipation and learning occurs.  R.E.A.D. programs provide support to children by offering the reading practice necessary to build vocabulary, increase the understanding of the material, and gain fluency as a reader. And….it is fun!
